Student Guide

Audience: students

AFCT shows your courses, assignments, submissions, grades, and comments. You cannot view another student's individual work or grades.

See Roles and permissions for the full access model.

Join a course

Your instructor can enroll you directly or give you a registration code. A registration code works only when the course is published, the enrollment window is open, and the code is correct.

An enrolled course does not appear to students until it is published. If you expect to see a course, ask the instructor to confirm that it is published and that your account is on the roster.

Students cannot remove themselves from a course. Contact the course staff if your enrollment needs to change.

Find assignments

The dashboard and calendar show published assignments from courses you can access. Unpublished assignments are hidden.

On the calendar, the Courses box on the right lists your courses with a checkbox each. They all start checked; uncheck a course to hide its assignments from the calendar and the Upcoming Assignments list, and check it again to bring them back. Your choice is remembered on this device the next time you open the calendar.

Assignment pages show deadlines in your effective timezone. When the course uses a different timezone, AFCT shows the course time as well. This is useful when you travel or take a course hosted in another region.

Submit work

Open an assignment, choose a problem, and upload the requested file.

A few rules the server enforces:

  • A problem can allow unlimited attempts or set a maximum, and each accepted upload counts as an attempt. Submitted attempts cannot be edited or deleted, so check the file before uploading it. To correct your work, submit another attempt if the problem still allows one.
  • After the due date, AFCT accepts work only when late submissions are enabled and any late cutoff has not passed. The server enforces deadlines, so changing a device clock or timezone does not change the result.
  • AFCT may also require a short cooldown between attempts on the same problem. The page tells you when to try again.

Review results and comments

When autograding is enabled, the result and feedback appear after evaluation finishes. A course staff member can later adjust the grade.

Comments belong to a specific assignment, problem, and student. You can add a comment and read replies in your thread. Students cannot delete comments.

For group assignments, you and your group share one set of submissions per problem: any member can submit, everyone sees the group's work, and autograding gives the whole group the same grade (a grader can adjust an individual member's grade). Coordinate with your group so you do not submit over each other. Access to another group's work remains restricted.

Update your profile

You can update your name, avatar, and timezone. Choose Automatic to follow the current device timezone, or select a fixed timezone to keep the display consistent.

Your account email address cannot be changed in AFCT. Contact an administrator if it is incorrect.

Sign-in problems

Too many failed attempts temporarily lock an account. The lock clears on its own after the lockout period; you can wait it out, or ask an administrator to unlock your account immediately or reset your password.

An administrator can set a temporary password. When that option is used, AFCT asks you to choose a new password at your next sign-in.
